Split one Excel column into several

When “City State Zip” lives in one cell or “Anna, Ben, Carl” is crammed together, choose that column and a separator and the split table appears below: the new columns take the original column’s place, the rest shift right, and headers are named “Header_1, Header_2”. Separators: comma, full-width comma, ideographic comma, semicolon, space, tab — or type your own, like “/” or “-”.

Can I calculate with the split numbers?

Yes. Values without a leading zero and up to 15 integer digits become numbers you can sum; phone numbers, ID numbers and codes like 007 stay as text, so no leading zeros or digits are lost.

What if cells have different numbers of parts?

The cell with the most parts decides the column count; shorter rows are left blank at the end.

Can the separator be several characters?

Yes — type it under Custom, e.g. “ - ” or “||”.

Is it the same as Excel’s Data ▸ Text to Columns?

The delimited part is the same, plus common CJK separators; Excel’s fixed-width mode is not included.

Will my original file be changed?

No — you download a new file.
