FAQ

How are Chinese characters counted?

Each Chinese character counts as one word, as do Japanese kana and Korean syllables. Languages written with spaces count per word, and punctuation never counts. This matches Google Docs.

Why is my count different from Word?

Different programs treat punctuation, numbers and mixed scripts slightly differently, so counts can differ by a few. To compare with Word’s “Characters (no spaces)”, use the “without spaces” figure here.

Can I count a Word file directly?

Yes. Drop a .docx file and its body text is read and counted; headers and footers are left out. Save legacy .doc files as .docx first.

Is my text uploaded?

No. Counting runs entirely in your browser; close the page and the text is gone.

How are languages without spaces, like Thai, counted?

They are split into words with the browser’s built-in word segmentation. Very old browsers without it count a whole run as one word.

How is reading time estimated?

At 300 CJK characters or 200 words per minute, rounded to the nearest minute with a minimum of one.
